Good Morning, Love

It’s 6:15 a.m.

I bolt out of bed, wanting to have some alone time in the bathroom before waking Jonan at 6:30.

I grab my iPhone—heaven forbid I go into the bathroom without it—and check my Gmail account. There are more reviews for my most recently updated fanfiction, bringing the total on this chapter near the coveted 50.

Score.

Pleased with this turn of events, I then click over to Facebook to address the four pressing alerts awaiting me there. People liked my posts, invited me to view pages, or commented on something I also commented on.

This is life-affirming stuff. How could I possibly begin my day without knowing these things?

Meanwhile somewhere in the cavern of my heart, I hear this soft whisper.

“Good morning, love.”

I pause, realizing Who it is, and kinda say, “Yeah, hey God. Not right now. Got a lot going on.”

From there, I wake up my son, assist with his morning toilette, and return to my bedroom to find my husband clutching his head, barely moving. It’s a headache day, which I expected, so I’m grabbing my phone again to text our God-sent neighbors who agree to take Jonan to school today, as I am still unable to travel beyond a block or two on foot.

Then I remember they already agreed to do that for the forseeable future, and I calm down.

For the moment.

“Good morning, love,” I hear again.

“Yes, God. I know. I need to spend some time with you, but I’m just too busy right now. Gimme about an hour, yeah?”

By this point, Braylee (aka Mommy’s Shadow) is awake. This puts a wrench in my plans to have some quiet (read: alone) time once Jonan and my youngest stepson leave for school. I’ve been awake for a half hour, and I’m already overwrought. I didn’t get enough sleep last night, so I’m sleepy to boot.

“This is my specialty.” He’s laughing but not at me. “If you’d come to me, I could give you rest.”

“Rest?!” I almost shriek the word. “Are you kidding?”

“I never kid about rest,” he seems to say. “Or about what I can do for you if you’d let me.”

I nod and continue doing things my way, growing wearier by the minute.

About an hour later, I notice Jonan looking my way with those adorable sad eyes, just needing some Mommy time as he prepares for school. I take him on my lap, lay his head against my chest, and begin to recite, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures….”

From there, I go to Psalm 1, Psalm 121, and Psalm 100, treasured chapters learned in childhood which have much greater significance now. As the words fall from my lips, I feel them seeping into my soul, refreshing and restoring me, and I am comforted.

And from the depths of my heart, I whisper, “Good morning, Lord.”

He smiles. “Good morning, love.”
